Course Content

The programme is delivered over an average of one day per week in college where you will complete the vocational qualification. As part of your apprenticeship, you will also complete the competency-based qualification with a portfolio of evidence and onsite assessment.

Modules on the Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment qualification include:

  • Construction Principles
  • Construction Design
  • Construction Technology
  • Health and Safety in Construction
  • Surveying in Construction
  • Graphical Detailing in Construction
  • Building Regulations
  • Management of a Construction Project 
  • Plus, two additional modules
  • Projects in Construction*
  • Offsite and Onsite Alternative Construction Methods*

You must be employed from day one of this apprenticeship programme. Construction technical - level 3 apprentice roles include (but are not limited to):

  • Surveyor
  • Estimator
  • Site Engineer
  • Façade design
  • CAD technician
  • Design coordinator
  • Projector Planner
  • Building Inspector
  • Customer Services
  • Health & Safety Officer

Successful apprentices will progress onto the Higher-Level Apprenticeship (HLA) and complete a Foundation Degree. This effectively gives apprentices a 5-year ‘earn while they learn’ programme where they will graduate in year 5 with a Foundation Degree at Level 5 and have at least 5 years of full-time work experience. 


Course Aims

To provide apprentices with a recognised qualification in construction technical which they can complete alongside their role within the industry with a progression routes to the following Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) programmes:

  • Construction Engineering with Surveying
  • Architectural Technology
  • Modern Methods of Construction 

Progression routes to full-time work or university degree programmes are viable options on completion of this level 3 apprenticeship.


A minimum of 5 GCSEs of grade C or above, including English and Mathematics or equivalent.

Suitable employment within the construction industry in a technical role.  Contact the college for a list of employers who are currently interested in recruiting apprentices.

All relevant paperwork should be uploaded to the admissions portal prior to being considered for an apprenticeship, this should include your:

  • Employer response form
  • Vision verification form (Electrical Installation only)
  • One form of official photographic ID
  • Official proof of your National Insurance number eg Letter from HMRC

On completion of the apprenticeship programme, you will have achieved both the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment and Pearson Edexcel Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations.

On completion of the apprenticeship, students may progress to higher education to complete a Higher Level Apprenticeship, Higher National Diploma, or full-time employment.

Essential Skills

All full-time students at Northern Regional College have the opportunity to improve their English, Maths and ICT skills and gain qualifications. The qualification you take will depend on the qualification you already have. If you do not have a grade C or above in GCSE English, Maths or ICT, you MUST complete Essential Skills; this will form a compulsory part of your timetable. If you are planning to go on to further study (for example university), please check if a GCSE qualification (rather than Essential Skills Level 2 equivalent) is required. For those who have a GCSE grade D in Maths or English, we offer a GCSE fast-track course.
