Course Content

This qualification is aimed at learners preparing for roles in engineering, for example engineering technician or engineering operative.  Learners gain relevant skills and knowledge from studying a range of content focused on mechanical and electrical and electronic disciplines, for example Computer Aided Manufacturing and Planning and Electronic Devices and Circuits.

The qualification consists of ten units of study, which are evenly spread across the two years of the course.  To achieve the full award, learners must successfully complete the assigned five units in year one to enter year two of the programme.

The units of study are given below:

PEARSON BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (RQF)

(10 Units made up from 5 Mandatory units and 5 specialist Units)

Mandatory Units

  • Engineering Principles
  • Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
  • Engineering Product Design and Manufacture
  • Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering
  • A Specialist Engineering Project

Specialist Units

  • Computer Aided Design in Engineering
  • Electrical Installation of Hardware and Cables
  • Electronic Devices and Circuits
  • Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Computer Aided Manufacturing and Planning

Throughout the course there is a mix between practical and theory classes


Applicants should have at least 4 GCSE's at Grade C or above including Maths and one other STEM subject.

A Level 2 BTEC Extended Certificate or Diploma in Engineering with Merit grade in Maths for Engineering and satisfactory performance in any externally examined units will be considered.

In circumstances where there are more applications for the course than there are places available, the College reserves the right to select candidates by enhancing the criteria to consider higher grades or achievement in STEM subjects.
