Course Content

The Level 5 Award in Green Technologies (Pathway: Hydrogen Production Systems and Technologies) is designed for learners who wish to develop skills and knowledge in this growing field. Learners are expected to have experience in the construction industry and an interest in the application of green technologies in the built environment. This course is also aimed at those who are progressing from the Level 3 Award in Hydrogen Applications and Technologies programme.

This Level 5 course aims to equip learners with an understanding of the safe use of hydrogen, hydrogen production systems, and related technologies.

Covering the following areas:

  • Health and Safety requirements and standards for hydrogen production systems and technologies.
  • Risk assessments and safety controls for working in gaseous atmospheres.
  • Environmental impact and fuel security in relation to energy usage.
  • Hydrogen production processes.
  • Impact of hydrogen on the gas grid network system.
  • Gas blending for hydrogen and natural gas.
  • By-products of hydrogen and fossil fuel combustion, and their implications for system design.

Assessment Methods

The course is delivered through a blend of online learning and laboratory practical tasks. Most of the theory is delivered online and assessed through a portfolio of evidence, with learners required to attend the Ballymena campus for at least one full day to complete tutor-led practical demonstrations and observations. The proposed dates for the practical sessions will be shared on the first day of the course or during pre-enrolment.

Learners must be at least 18 years of age, have GCSE Grade C or above in Mathematics and English (or equivalent), and hold a Level 3 qualification or have at least five years of experience in the construction and related industries.

Where students wish to have prior education and/or experience taken into account, in lieu of meeting the full course entry requirements, they should contact the relevant Course Director or Admissions. APEL applications must be submitted at least 2 weeks before the start date of the programme. More details can be found in the APEL Policy.

The OCN NI Level 5 Award in Green Technologies will allow learners to progress to the OCN NI Level 5 Certificate and Extended Certificate in Green Technologies. From there learners may progress to higher level qualifications in the area of environmental conservation and green technologies or into employment.
