Course Content

This course is suitable for anyone wishing to work as a classroom assistant in primary, secondary or special needs schools.   The course will provide classroom-based learning designed to provide a thorough understanding of the curriculum requirements of the sector.  A work placement assessor will also provide support and feedback to match the development needs of the student.  The course is designed to provide students with a well-rounded and thorough knowledge of school and classroom policies and procedures.  Subjects taught include: literacy development, numeracy development, safeguarding, professional development and behaviour management.

Students will be required to attend a mandatory pre-course information session 

There are 15 units & a mandatory work placement (6-8 hours per week) in a suitable classroom setting where a minimum of two observations will be carried out as part of the assessment process.

Assessment Methods

The course will be assessed by assignments, case studies, practical exercises, presentations, and placement observations. 


Applicants must:

  • have a minimum of GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or equivalent (enhanced criteria may apply such as suitable employment/experience & further qualifications)
  • ​satisfactory Access NI checks
  • be 19 years or over at the date of entry to the programme
  • have some ICT knowledge (this is desirable)

This course can lead to other qualifications such as:

  • Level 4 Autism Course 
  • Level 5 Foundation Degree 
  • BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies 
  • BEd PGCE (depending on current qualifications)
