Course Content

This exciting new part-time Level 4 qualification is targeted at those wishing to develop an understanding of the skills and knowledge required to teach English to speakers of other languages within Northern Ireland and in other countries. It is primarily designed for adults who have not attained a level 4 (or above) teaching qualification, or those who have an existing teaching qualification but wish to develop specific skills and knowledge in the area of teaching English to speakers of other languages.

This course comprises of three mandatory units:

  • Principles of teaching ESOL – an understanding of the theory of language acquisition and development.
  • Teaching technique – lesson plans, developing appropriate teaching material, evaluating existing material.
  • Awareness of language for teaching ESOL – reflecting on your use of language, teaching specific language structures, analysing production and reception skills, using and developing formative and summative assessments.

Assessment Methods

 Assessment will take the form of portfolio-based evidence and/or research projects alongside practical assignments.


You must be aged 19 years or older and hold a minimum of 'C' grade in GCSE English.

Where students wish to have prior education and/or experience taken into account, in lieu of meeting the full course entry requirements, they should contact the relevant Course Director or Admissions.
