Previous Roles/Industry Experience: I am a qualified veterinary nurse with industrial experience working in various veterinary clinics/hospitals for 15 years. I achieved a diploma in advanced veterinary nursing specialising in surgical nursing before completing the BSc Hons Degree in Veterinary Nursing with Business Management. I have worked as an examiner and lecturer of veterinary nursing before employment with the College as a lecturer in Animal Management. I have just completed the postgraduate diploma in Education with Ulster University and will complete the master's degree in Education (MEd) next year.
Benefit(s) of learning from an industry expert: My dissertation is on this very subject! The lecturer with industrial experience will bring a wealth of real-life experience to the classroom and link with industrial experts to enhance opportunities for work placement/ employment and guest speakers. I can incorporate problem-based learning more effectively into my lessons and provide examples throughout every lesson applying the theory to practical work placement.
Tell us why students should study your course/subject area at Northern Regional College: The staff who currently teach the courses are lecturers who have significant industrial experience in their professional sector. On the teaching team we have a veterinary surgeon, a veterinary physiotherapist, and a veterinary nurse. The students therefore benefit from the expertise of the lecturers and our links with industry.
Most rewarding part of your job: It has been rewarding watching students progress from our level 2 animal care through to level 3 animal management and then attending their graduation ceremony as they successfully complete the level 4 and level 5 HND in animal management. To observe their growth and development as they move up into higher education at the College is very rewarding as a lecturer and I know I was full of pride watching them achieve.
Most memorable moment at Northern Regional College: Attending our first graduation ceremony for the HND level 5 animal management students. Also, during our open evening this year, a past student entered the room and proceeded to tell me she had graduated with a degree in veterinary physiotherapy following completion of our level 3 animal management diploma and she will always remember how much we had impacted on her career!
