Following last year’s WorldSkills UK National Competition, three former Northern Regional College students have been selected to compete for a spot on the National UK Squad for Industrial Robotics and undergo intensive highly skilled training in preparation for the final selection stage. WorldSkills is a competition-based development programme, designed by industry experts, to enhance the practical skills and knowledge taught on training courses. The skills competitions assess employability attributes against set criteria in a competitive environment. The programme has a positive impact on competitors with 90% of previous entrants saying their career progression improved after competing.

Northern Regional College is committed to “improving student learning” by working closely with leaders in the plumbing sector to provide students with up-to-date, bespoke training on modern appliances. At a recent event at its Newtownabbey campus, local manufacturers and suppliers not only met students but also saw their workshop, complete with new technologies to help prepare them for a fast-paced, ever-changing industry.

Year 10 pupils from eight local schools took part in Ballymena Rotary Club’s annual technology challenge hosted by Northern Regional College at its Trostan Avenue campus. For this year’s challenge, the students had to design, build and test an advertising billboard with a flashing beacon. Sixty pupils, working in teams of four and representing St Louis Grammar School, St Patrick’s College, Slemish Integrated College, Dunclug College, Cullybackey College, Cambridge House, Castle Tower School and Ballymena Academy, went head-to-head to complete the challenge in the allocated time.

Sports students at Northern Regional College had an opportunity to put their coaching skills into practice at the recent ‘football festival’ hosted by the College for local primary school pupils at Ballymena Showgrounds. Primary 5 pupils from St Comcille's Primary School and Braidside Integrated Primary School were put through their paces during an enjoyable coaching session which was conducted by BTEC Level 3 Sports Coaching and Development students, with support from the IFA Education Officers, Diarmuid McNeice, Dan Chambers and Francis Brennan.
