Students from Northern Regional College have participated in an inter-campus Software for Business Solutions competition. The competition, held across all four campuses, is the first step in the lead up to the national WorldSkills UK competition which will take place towards the end of 2022. The top six scoring students will move forward to the next stage, which is the regional heat and the step before the UK-wide final.

Forty Level 3 Childcare students from Northern Regional College attended a series of employability workshops with Sharon Lyons, Project Manager with Harpurs Hill Children & Family Centre, and member of the Northern Ireland Childcare Partnership. The workshops were held across at four of the College campuses with Sharon providing insight and guidance for Childcare students on initial employment applications all the way to final job interview. This innovative 6-week programme was designed by Harpurs Hill in collaboration with Northern Regional College Childcare lecturers to develop Childcare students’ employability skills.

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council and the President of Causeway Coast Chamber of Commerce were among local stakeholders invited to view progress on the construction of Northern Regional College’s new Coleraine campus. Fully funded by the Department for the Economy, the overall cost of the new campus at Union Street is £40 million, forming part of a £85 million capital investment programme to provide new campuses for the College in Coleraine and Ballymena. Heron Bros is the main contractor for both projects.

Northern Regional College hosted the inter-campus heats of SkillBuild NI 2022 at its campuses in Newtownabbey (Electrical Installation, Carpentry, Joinery and Plumbing) and Ballymena (Bricklaying). SkillBuild – the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for young students and apprentices is an annual competition governed by the Construction Industry and Training Board NI (CITB NI) covering a range of construction-related disciplines.

Year 12 pupils from local secondary schools visited Northern Regional College’s Ballymoney campus to learn more about vocational courses and apprenticeship opportunities available on their doorstep. The College hosted a series of ‘taster’ sessions in joinery, catering, motor vehicle and hairdressing. Pupils from Coleraine College, North Coast Integrated College, Dominican College Portstewart and Our Lady of Lourdes in Ballymoney attended two practical sessions in their chosen subjects. As well as getting some ‘hands on’ experience in the College’s well- equipped workshops, they had an opportunity to meet lecturers and current students to learn more about the courses in the different curriculum areas.
