Having completed an intensive five-week programme of industry standard welding training at Northern Regional College in Ballymena, the Assured Skills Welding Academy trainees are now doing a two-week placement with local fabrication and engineering companies. Northern Regional College will play an important role in Northern Ireland’s first ever Hydrogen Training Academy which has been officially launched by Minister for the Economy, Gordon Lyons MLA. The new Ballymena-based Academy will support the development of a skilled workforce to take full advantage of emerging hydrogen and cleantech opportunities. It is being led by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, having secured a public-private investment of £700,000 from the UK Government’s Community Renewal Fund, the Department for Communities Covid-Revitalisation Fund and EP UK Investments.

The Read Yourself Well project will allow free access to an extensive collection of health and wellness related books recommended and written by wellness experts, doctors and best-selling authors.

Year 12 pupils from local secondary schools visited Northern Regional College’s Magherafelt campus to learn more about vocational courses and apprenticeship opportunities available on their doorstep. The College hosted a series of ‘taster’ sessions in joinery, engineering and civil engineering, motor vehicle and hairdressing. Pupils from St Pius X College, Sperrin Integrated College in Magherafelt and Cross and Passion College in Ballycastle attended two practical sessions in their chosen subjects.

Staff at Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus have collaborated with their local football club to develop a ten-week health and fitness programme, to support students’ mental well-being. An initiative with Greenisland Football Club will pilot from February onwards with students on the College Connect programme at the Newtownabbey and Ballymena campuses.

Traineeships will have an important role to play in Northern Ireland’s economic recovery. Northern Regional College currently offers traineeships in traditional vocational areas such as brickwork, plumbing, motor vehicle, engineering, and joinery and the College’s provision is set to expand across a wide range of vocational areas over the next two years.
