Julie Spratt from Knockloughrim, who left school at sixteen with just one GCSE to her name, is now doing a Biomedical Science degree at university with a career goal of working in a medical research laboratory as a biomedical scientist.

Ex-electrician Ian Thomson, who first attended Northern Regional College in 1994, returned to the College to complete a Foundation Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and recently graduated with a distinction grade. Ian, who worked as an electrician for 20 years before becoming an Electrotechnical Trainer Assessor, decided to enhance his skillset and knowledge by undertaking the Foundation Degree at the College.

Newtownabbey-based Karen Kearns has graduated from Northern Regional College achieving the highest overall mark in her year group. Karen, who recently completed a University of Ulster validated Foundation Degree in Integrative Counselling Practice at the College, was nominated for the Dean’s Award for her consistently high performance throughout her studies.

Economy Minister Diane Dodds today launched the Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Awards 2021. The Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Awards 2021 will recognise excellence in apprenticeships and culminate in a special ‘virtual’ awards ceremony on Wednesday 28 April 2021 – one of the highlight events during Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Week 2021, which will run from 26 to 30 April 2021.

Following approval by the Minister for the Economy, Diane Dodds, the tender for the construction of a new campus for Northern Regional College at its existing Farm Lodge site in Ballymena has now been released. The new build project will see the consolidation of the College’s current provision at Farm Lodge and Trostan Avenue sites in Ballymena into one, purpose-built campus at Farm Lodge.

Carrick mum graduates with distinction

A young mother from Carrickfergus is on course to fulfil her ambition of becoming a nurse after completing an Access to University Diploma at Northern Regional College. Clare Scallon graduated with Distinction at the College’s Higher Education (HE) graduation ceremony this week and is about to embark on the next stage of her journey to qualify as a nurse. She has accepted a place on the Children and Young People’s Nursing degree at Queen’s University Belfast and starts in February 2021.
