Demolition of Coleraine Campus Gets Underway

The demolition of the former Coleraine Union Street campus is well underway, heralding the start of an exciting new chapter in the College’s development. The former College building at Union Street and the former Church hall on Brook Street are being levelled to make way for the £40m state-of-the-art campus development which is scheduled for completion in 2023. The original red-brick campus building opened in 1930, with further extensions throughout the 1950s and in the late 1960s, the six-story tower block was added.

Economy Minister Diane Dodds today urged vocational learners to remain focused on their futures and told them they will receive the support they need to continue their courses. The Minister was speaking after all six of Northern Ireland’s further education colleges and a number of schools and training organisations chose to cancel forthcoming January vocational examinations due to the current Covid-19 pandemic.

Studying at Northern Regional College opened doors for a young Portstewart mother of two, who is now doing a degree in Architectural Technology at Ulster University. Joanne Caskey, mum to Bobby (10) and Bella (5), was awarded a Foundation Degree with Distinction in Construction with Surveying at the College’s Higher Education graduations, paving the way for her to go to university.

Support and encouragement from her family and lecturers at Northern Regional has helped a County Derry woman to embark on a transformational journey towards a new career path. Julie Spratt from Knockloughrim, who left school at sixteen with just one GCSE to her name, is now doing a Biomedical Science degree at university with a career goal of working in a medical research laboratory as a biomedical scientist.

Ex-electrician Ian Thomson, who first attended Northern Regional College in 1994, returned to the College to complete a Foundation Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and recently graduated with a distinction grade. Ian, who worked as an electrician for 20 years before becoming an Electrotechnical Trainer Assessor, decided to enhance his skillset and knowledge by undertaking the Foundation Degree at the College.
