Portrush teenager, James Wilkinson, a first year Creative Media student at Northern Regional College, has won ‘Best Advertisement’ at the 2019 Inter Colleges Media Competition. A dedicated follower of the so-called ‘green and white army’, James used his impressive digital skills to create a stirring promotional video for the Northern Ireland football team. The standard of James’ work was so high, it even caught the attention of the national team, who shared the video across their social media platforms.

Year 10 students from nine local schools took part in a technology tournament hosted by Northern Regional College and Ballymena Rotary Club at the College’s Farm Lodge campus, which saw them go head to head to design, build and launch a space capsule. This year’s annual tournament was the largest yet, with 80 students from St Benedict’s College, Ballymena Academy, St Louis Grammar School, Cambridge House Grammar School, St Patrick’s College, Slemish College, Castle Tower School, Dunclug College and Cullybackey College putting forward 19 teams to compete for the top prize of £200.

Northern Regional College carpentry lecturer Ian Forsythe, has been awarded the Hugh Gettinby Memorial Award for Excellence in Construction Training. Ian, who is based at the Coleraine campus was presented with the award at the SkillbuildNI 2019 finals. The prestigious award is awarded annually to an individual involved in the training of young people and who has displayed the highest standards of success and dedication to the Skillbuild NI ethos. Previous College winners include Alan Stewart (Brickwork) and Frank McDonagh (Plumbing).

Two Art students at Northern Regional College in Ballymena have secured scholarships to help them continue their passion for art at university. Sacha McCart, from Rasharkin and Krystal Hutchinson from Ballymena have both been awarded scholarships to study Fine Art at the University of Central Lancashire. Although both are now heading towards the same destination, they will have taken different pathways to get there.

Congratulations to IT lecturer Andrew Paul who is the first member of staff to achieve the internationally recognised Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Master accreditation. To become a Specialist Master, candidates must pass exams and demonstrate proficiency in four Microsoft Office programmes including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Northern Regional College is organising a digital initiative which involves a series of events and workshops across its six campuses as part of a European-wide digital programme. Microsoft’s Academic Program Manager was one of the lead speakers at one of the kick-off events. Taking place from 25 – 29 Mach 2019, Northern Regional College’s Digital Skills Week coincides with ALL DIGITAL Week, an annual digital empowerment campaign which promotes the importance of digital skills for inclusion and employment and engages 100,000 people across Europe in online and offline events with the aim of tackling digital transformation and its effects.
