South Africa trip an “incredible opportunity” for Northern Regional College apprentice

An award winning apprentice carpenter at the College’s Coleraine campus has travelled to South Africa to learn about the work of apprentices there. Samuel Gilmore (17) from Aghadowey, who took home a highly-coveted gold medal from the UK World Skills competition, travelled to South Africa as an ambassador for the College. After leaving school in 2016, Samuel completed Level 2 Skills for Work course at the Coleraine campus. The following year, he was employed by Mark Pollock Joinery in Kilrea and now spends four days with his employer and one day in the College workshop as he works towards achieving a Level 3 award in site carpentry.

In July, Limavady-native Eamon will jet off to the sunnier climes of Bakersfield, California to play college soccer whilst studying International Business with a full scholarship which covers the costs of his tuition, accommodation, food and sporting gear.

To become a Specialist Master, they have to pass exams and demonstrate proficiency in four Microsoft Office programmes.

Secondary school students had the opportunity to experience the very latest in cutting-edge technology at Northern Regional College’s Bring It On event, hosted at the College’s Magherafelt campus. Over 40 students from Magherafelt High School and Sperrin Integrated College spent the day trying out high-tech professional software and innovative hardware that they cannot get their hands on in the classroom and learning about a range of digital careers – from cyber security to programming to animation.

Jennifer went to university in Spain and even achieved a masters degree in nutrition. Although she loved her degree, after a few months of working in her chosen field, Jennifer realised the job just wasn’t for her. She decided to make a change and took the brave decision to take her career in a different direction.
