Emmalee O’Connell, an 18-year-old Food & Beverage Service Apprentice from Ballyclare, made the brave decision to eschew university in favour of a practical apprenticeship with Northern Regional College and the Galgorm Resort & Spa Hotel, and hasn’t looked back since. Emmalee grew up in Ballyclare and attended Ballyclare High School where she excelled in her studies, obtaining A-Levels in biology, politics and business studies. Emmalee was on track to study forensic science at university, however, at the last minute she re-assessed her career options.

Elaine Ramsey’s career went off on a completely different trajectory when decided to do a Diploma in Foundation Studies as a mature student at Northern Regional College in Coleraine. That was back in 1994. At the time, Elaine was married with two young daughters and had to juggle study with family commitments and her part-time job in retail. Fast forward to 2019 and Elaine is Professor of Business Innovation at Ulster University and a Distinguished Research Fellow.

Many students who completed work placements as part of their course at Northern Regional College have gone on to secure employment with their placement company. Daniel Wieczorek from Ballymena did a Foundation Degree in Applied and Medical Science at the Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus. During a Work Based Learning placement with County Antrim medical diagnostics manufacturer and distributor, Daniel impressed his employer and was offered a position in the company’s research and development laboratory. He is currently working there on a part-time basis while he completes a degree in Biomedical Science at Ulster University.

Thomas Hammill, a final year student in Creative Media Production (Interactive Media) at Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey Campus has been putting the digital skills he has honed in the classroom to good use snapping product photography for international footwear and apparel brand, size?. Thomas, who has shortlisted for the WorldSkills UK finals last year in Birmingham, progressed from Level 2 Creative Digital Media to Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production (Interactive Media), which offers students a wide range of subjects including digital photography, video production and graphic design.
