“Completing a foundation degree was life changing for me”

Wednesday

Female in graduation gown

Lyndsay Grattan, a Foundation Degree in Integrative Counselling student, has graduated from Northern Regional College’s Ballymena campus after making a career change. The Foundation Degree in Integrative Counselling is three years in total and includes placement opportunities for students to help build their knowledge of the sector.

Lyndsay, who had worked in hospitality for 26 years, decided to leave her role as a Hospitality Manager to fulfil her dream of helping others.

She said: “Helping others was always something that I wanted to do. But for many years, I put off completing a course. I was fearful that I was too old to go back and study.

Lyndsay completed a Level 4 in counselling to make sure that the field was for her. She said taking the chance to complete the course changed her life.

“I loved it. It was everything I ever imagined. Completing the Level 4 made me want to progress further as I knew it was exactly what I wanted to do.

“I was so well supported by the lecturers and peers. Both my lecturers, Michelle Laverty and Minford McBride were so helpful, and I couldn’t have asked for better lecturers. They really know their stuff.”

Lyndsay now works in Counselling as her full-time job, she is self-employed while working from a private practice.

Despite having undergone a complete career change, Lyndsay has ambitious dreams for the future and hopes to open up her own practice one day.
