South Derry man, Darrell Green is studying a Light Vehicle Motor Vehicle Traineeship at Northern Regional College’s Magherafelt campus.
At 22 years of age, Darrell is older than the other trainees in his class with previous work experience in the retail, hospitality, and manufacturing sectors.
“I was always interested in cars but didn’t know what area I wanted to work in when I left school. I travelled a bit and had a lot of different jobs but didn’t see myself working in any of them long term.
Darrell says the Motor Vehicle traineeship helped sharpen his focus. He secured a placement with a local garage and the owner was so impressed with his work and commitment, that he offered Darrel a job.
Darrell, who now works part-time with MB Auto Repairs, acknowledges that the traineeship certainly improved his employment prospects.
“I love working with cars and the traineeship helped improve my skills and knowledge no end. I was surprised at how much we to cover but the lecturers are very supportive.
“I enjoyed my placement with MB Auto Repair and was fortunate to secure a job out of it. Being in the garage workshop helps me realise the relevance of the theory being taught in class which is always a good thing.”
Darrell adds that he would encourage other young people to explore the traineeship option:
“If you’re like me and enjoy working with cars, I would certainly encourage you to try a traineeship. It could be your stepping stone to a successful career.”
