Newtownabbey brickwork trainees had an opportunity to see the work involved in a major building project during a visit to Woodburn Primary School in Carrickfergus which is currently under construction. The first and second year trainees, accompanied by staff members Kieran Kelly and Sarah Lynas were given a guided tour of the £3.1 million new school development by site foreman Andy Greer.

McAdam Design are managing the project and the contractor is Glasgiven.

Building work is on schedule and due for completion in August in time for the new school year.

At the start of the visit, the foreman highlighted the importance of site health and safety and then outlined the programme of works, the trades and tasks already completed, the trades currently being completed and the schedule for the outstanding programme of works.

As they were being shown around the site, the trainees had an opportunity to examine different blockwork and brickwork and discuss issues such as time frames and costs with the foreman, who also showed them the trades currently on site, including plastering, plumbing, groundworks, heating and ventilation.

Brickwork lecturer, Kieran Kelly said the visit was a great success and would be very beneficial for the students as it will help them understand the relevance of the practical work and theory they do in College.

“Andy took a lot of questions from the trainees, including ones about the wages bricklayers were getting on the job and they were very pleased with the answers!

“He also highlighted that there is a shortage of skilled bricklayers on sites which means there will be plenty of opportunities for this group of bricklayers learning their trade when they finish College.”
