Some of the College’s most talented young tradesmen will battle it out this week at the annual intercampus heats of SkillBuild NI. Hosted by the Newtownabbey campus, this is the first leg of a journey that could potentially lead to the WorldSkills finals in China in 2021. SkillBuild is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for young students and apprentices. The SkillBuild NI competitions, which are governed and run by the Construction Industry and Training Board Northern Ireland (CITB NI), cover a range of construction-related disciplines including plumbing, carpentry, bricklaying, joinery and electrical installation.

Winners of the College’s inter-campus competitions will progress to the Skillbuild 2020 NI Finals at CITB NI, Nutts Corner Training Centre in May 2020 where they will come up against the winners from other Colleges and training organisations. The highest scoring apprentices from across all the regional finals in the UK will qualify for WorldSkills UK Live finals in Birmingham in November. Gold medallists at the UK finals could potentially represent Team GB in Worldskills finals in Shanghai.

David Russell, Assistant Head of Department for Engineering and Built Environment at the College said: “SkillBuild gives our students a fantastic experience to enhance their skills and knowledge in their chosen trade. We have really skilled young people at the College so this is a fantastic opportunity for them to demonstrate their ability and test their skills against those of their peers.”
