Newtownabbey Student Excels in Digital Games Development at Northern Regional College

Tuesday

Jack Bingham, a student from Newtownabbey and former pupil of Belfast Royal Academy, has made significant strides in his education and career path by studying Level 3 in Digital Games Development at Northern Regional College. Reflecting on his experience, Jack expressed his appreciation for the dedication of his lecturers and the comprehensive nature of the course.

"I loved how committed the lecturers were to our success and how thoroughly they taught the course, ensuring we were prepared for university and the games industry," he said.

This course is offered at the Newtownabbey and Causeway Campuses and is a two-year programme.  One of the real benefits of studying this course is the NextGen partnership (only offered at the Newtownabbey Campus) which offers an unparalleled level of industry engagement. The College has partnered with world-renowned Games, Animation, and VFX studios that shape the entertainment landscape, including Creative Assembly, Framestore, DNEG, Industrial Light and Magic, Blue Zoo Animation, and many more. NextGen students gain firsthand knowledge and real-world exposure to the industry, receiving invaluable feedback on their project work from seasoned experts. With exciting remote work placements available at leading employers, students will have the chance to refine their skills through thrilling challenges.

One of the highlights of Jack's education was learning 3D modelling skills. Initially, he hadn't considered this a necessary skill for a game programmer, but creating basic assets proved to be immensely helpful for his future projects. Additionally, Jack found the audio skills he acquired at college to be invaluable.

Jack's favourite part of the course was the group game creation project in the second year. "Working with others to create a project we were happy with was so enjoyable! It also created a strong portfolio piece, which I continue to use to this day, and taught me team development skills that have been extremely beneficial in my collaborative game development projects at university," he shared.

After graduating from Staffordshire University with first-class honours, Jack is now seeking graduate opportunities in the games industry for programmers. He envisions himself in five years as a programmer in a games company, dedicated to creating enjoyable gameplay experiences.
With his solid educational background and passion for games development, Jack Bingham is poised for a promising career in the video games industry.
