Northern Regional College launches its seventh Reading Challenge

Wednesday

Library staff

In 2013, Northern Regional College joined up with national charity The Reading Agency, to get even more adults in the College reading, through the nationwide Six Book Challenge reading and adult literacy programme. In recent years, the library have adapted the original concept to enhance provision for a wider range of College user needs renaming the initiative to the annual ‘Northern Regional College Reading Challenge’. Now in its seventh year it is still going strong and its popularity continues to increase.

Northern Regional College Library Manager Angela Dynes said:

“I’m delighted that there has been such a great start to this year’s reading challenge and positive response from College staff. Now in its seventh year it is still going strong and its popularity continues to grow. I had the pleasure of attending Ballymoney’s launch today and it was wonderful to see so many learners and staff having fun and getting excited about the challenge. The library staff put a great deal of effort into organising and delivering this year on year which is testament to its continued success.  The Challenge will commence in each of College Libraries this week”

The College’s annual Reading Challenge has been launching this week across three campus; Ballymoney, Coleraine and Magherafelt, inviting students from all departments to pick six reads of their choice and complete a reading diary. Incentives are offered along the way and students who accomplish the challenge, will be awarded a certificate and entered into a prize draw.

There is a great atmosphere during launch time as each library hosts a range of fun and interactive activities. There is always a healthy competitive buzz when Kahoot! (Online game-based learning platform) comes into play and mystery prizes awarded. Arts and crafts activities also feature as part of the annual launch.

Reading Challenge Participants have the option of not just reading books but also other written materials in alternative formats such as; magazines, poems, online material e.g. e-books, blogs, news articles, digital games information and learners can even include what they read in class. For more information on the reading challenge contact your local campus library.
