To celebrate International Women’s Day, Northern Regional College organised a special visit to the construction site of the highly anticipated new Primark store at Fairhill Shopping Centre in Ballymena. The visit, spearheaded by Cherith Simpson, Lecturer in Construction & Built Environment at the College, aimed to encourage female students to consider a career in construction. Female pupils from local post-primary schools in the Ballymena area, along with Northern Regional College Construction students, had the opportunity to gain a first-hand insight into the world of construction.

Fairhill Shopping Centre has awarded Cleary Contracting Limited – a local construction company – the contract for the development, which will see the leading fashion retailer double the size of its presence in Ballymena. The new store, set to open in 2025 following a £7 million investment, will occupy approximately 26,100 square feet of retail space.

Speaking about the importance of the event, Cherith Simpson, Architectural Technologist and Construction Lecturer at Northern Regional College, said, “What better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than by empowering young women to step into an industry where they can truly make a difference? Encouraging more young women to consider careers in construction is vital for the future of the industry. Site visits like this provide a unique opportunity for students to see construction in action, engage with professionals and build their confidence in a traditionally male-dominated field. While construction companies are incredibly welcoming to all students, it can sometimes be daunting for a single female student to step forward. By organising this group visit, we’re showing them that they belong in this industry and have a bright future ahead.”

Emily McIntyre, a Level 3 Construction and the Built Environment student at Northern Regional College, also shared her thoughts on the experience, “Northern Regional College has been fantastic in supporting my journey into construction. Events like this really highlight the exciting opportunities available for women in the industry. No one should be afraid to pursue a career in construction – there is a place for everyone and I hope more young women feel inspired to take that first step.”

Two former apprentices who previously completed the Level 3 Construction course attended the event. Scarlett McArthur, now pursuing a Foundation Degree in Architectural Technology, and Orlaith McGilligan, studying Construction Engineering with Surveying. Both are continuing their studies at Farm Lodge in Ballymena.

The visit reinforced Northern Regional College’s commitment to promoting diversity within the construction sector, breaking down barriers and ensuring that young women feel empowered to pursue careers in the built environment.

Northern Regional College would like to extend its sincere thanks to Cleary Contracting Limited for facilitating the site visit and to Valerie McLernon from Fairhill Shopping Centre in Ballymena, who generously provided goodie bags for all attendees.
