Celine Taggart, a HNC Social and Community Work student, has graduated from Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus after making the decision to change career after more than 20 years working in pharmacy. Reflecting on why she decided to change careers after 23 years, she said she had an “underlying passion” for working with and helping children.

“I always wanted to help support families,” she said.

“I am a mum of three children myself and I always wanted to help others, so this has been a goal of mine for quite some time.”

Alongside completing the course, Celine also volunteered for ‘Action for Children’ to gain further experience which has helped in achieving her to her new role, as a Family Support Worker at SureStart Ballymena.

Outlining her experience at the College, Celine found the lecturers at Northern Regional College extremely encouraging and helpful.

“Both lecturers, Jacqui McAllister, our course director, and Siobhan McEldowney were extremely supportive and always were available to help when needed. I would recommend both to the highest level – both really made my experience at Northern Regional College special.”

Even though she has graduated, Celine is sure that her time at Northern Regional College is not over.

“I will return to Northern Regional College to complete my Level 5 HND.

“I really enjoyed the mental health module, which happened to be the largest module we studied. I completely lost myself in studying it and it proved to me what a passion I have for mental health,” she said.

Northern Regional College offers a range of full time and part time higher education courses.

Qualifications include Higher Level Apprenticeships (HLAs), Foundation Degrees, Higher National Certificates/Diplomas and Degrees. The College also offers an Access to University course which provides mature students with an alternative progression route to higher education.
