Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey and Ballymena campuses recently hosted its Creative Industries Showcase at The Theatre at the Mill, Newtownabbey. The event was a showcase of courses within the creative industries and student work, whilst also providing an opportunity for talent scouts, industry guests and press to meet with staff and students, allowing them to experience the College’s creative talents.

Subject areas present at the showcase included: Animation & VFX; Art & Fashion; Creative Media Production; Interactive Digital Media; Digital Games Design and Performing Arts.

Level 3 second year Performing Arts students also showcased their end-of-year performance of ‘Blood Wedding’, a dramatic play using surrealism and Spanish folk culture penned by famed Spanish playwright Federico Garcia Lorca.

The play is a tragedy depicting the story of a young woman and two men fighting for her love. Focusing on the bride and the two men who love her, Blood Wedding examines the societal norms that keep her from being with the man she loves and explores the power of desire unveiling the consequences of gender roles and isolation.

Gemma McGranaghan, Course Coordinator of Performing Arts for the Department of Creative Industries at the College’s Newtownabbey Campus commented:

“Our students work extremely hard throughout the year to hone their skills and harness their creativity, so it’s immensely rewarding for them, and for us, to watch a fantastic performance such as this one.

“Their performance is a testament to the incredible creative talent which is emerging from the College.”
