Male working in the carpentry workshop

County Antrim teenager Steven Gough (16) is studying a carpentry traineeship at Northern Regional College in Ballymoney. As a trainee, he spends three days a week in college, where his time is divided between the classroom and the carpentry workshops as he works towards achieving accredited Level 2 qualifications.

He spends one day each week on placement with a local contractor in Bushmills where he gets an opportunity to put into practice his newly acquired carpentry skills. Steven’s commitment and determination to succeed while on placement were so impressive that he was offered a part-time job.

Steven, was one of the few trainees put forward to compete in the inter-campus SkillsBuild NI skills competition, acquitting himself very well, even though he was up against tough competition from much older and more experienced apprentices.

Commenting on his experience of competing in SkillBuild NI, Steven said:

“It was interesting to see how the competitors approached the task and to see how my work measured up against the work.”

Looking to the future, Steven hopes to continue developing his carpentry skills to leave him well placed to secure an apprenticeship.

Ian Forsythe, Curriculum Area Manager with responsibility for Carpentry and Bricklaying at Northern Regional College said Steven was an excellent trainee who was enthusiastic and committed to improving his skills.

“Steven who is keen to develop his carpentry skills so a carpentry traineeship is an ideal way for him to secure the necessary skills and qualifications to improve his future employment prospects.”
