Student Designer Sandra wins Highest Achieving Student

Monday

Mature student, Sandra Streeter, who completed a Level 3 Diploma in Fashion Design at Northern Regional College was one of the Highest Achieving Students recognised at the College’s recent awards ceremonies. Originally from Colombia and now living in Broughshane, in County Antrim, Sandra, who is in her forties, admitted she was initially apprehensive about undertaking a Fashion & Design course as a mature student. A university graduate with teaching experience in her native Colombia, she met the course entry requirements but was still concerned about her artistic ability.

“I had grown up watching my mother work as a seamstress so I knew how to sew, cut and machine, quilt and embroider but I’d never done an art class in my life and I was afraid my work might be too one dimensional.”

“When I saw a post about the Fashion & Design course at the College on Facebook, I thought the heavens had answered my prayers. I was really excited about learning more about fashion and textiles but was still worried I wouldn’t be good enough.”

Her fears were unfounded however and, with support and guidance from Art & Design staff at the College’s Trostan Avenue campus, she soon settled into the course and loved every minute of her time there.

“My tutors were amazing. They taught me how to be inquisitive and develop my research skills, giving me the confidence and motivation to explore all avenues of fashion, textiles, drawing and painting from designing through to production. I’m now able to produce the work of a quality who which I’d never even dreamt of before.”

She added: “I can honestly say that the course has transformed my life. The College is now like a second home to me. I hope to be here for a while yet as I want to do the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design when I finish this course.”

Northern Regional College is introducing two new Level 3 Art & Design courses from September 2019. The Fashion with Art & Design Diploma and Industrial Art & Design Diplomas are each the equivalent of three A Levels upon successful completion of year two. The successful completion of first year equates to a 1.5 A-level equivalent. Both Diplomas will be offered on a full-time basis at the College’s Ballymena campus.
