Taster Sessions at Northern Regional College Ballymoney Campus

Wednesday

Three students in carpentry and joinery workshop

Year 12 pupils from local secondary schools visited Northern Regional College’s Ballymoney campus to learn more about vocational courses and apprenticeship opportunities available on their doorstep. The College hosted a series of ‘taster’ sessions in joinery, catering, motor vehicle and hairdressing. Pupils from Coleraine College, North Coast Integrated College, Dominican College Portstewart and Our Lady of Lourdes in Ballymoney attended two practical sessions in their chosen subjects. As well as getting some ‘hands on’ experience in the College’s well- equipped workshops, they had an opportunity to meet lecturers and current students to learn more about the courses in the different curriculum areas.

Schools welcomed the opportunity to participate in taster sessions to provide pupils a greater understanding of the various subject areas with many pupils finding the practical activities extremely enjoyable.

Samuel Gilmore who completed his carpentry apprenticeship at the College attended the  ‘taster’ sessions to encourage the visiting pupils to consider all the different options that are open to them.

He said his time at Northern Regional College not only helped him develop his carpentry skills but that the support he received from his lecturers and classmates had given him the confidence to compete in national and international competitions.

Samuel won the Northern Ireland Young Apprentice of the Year Award in 2018 and this was his platform for further success. He was a gold medallist at the WorldSkills UK National finals in Birmingham and was subsequently named Apprentice of the Year at the European Alliance for Apprenticeship Awards in Helsinki in Finland.

Applications are open for all courses starting in September 2022.  For further details visit www.nrc.ac.uk
