Combatting cybercrime, growing artificial intelligence and developing computer games were just some of the exciting new career opportunities in the computing sector showcased at an event hosted by Northern Regional College’s Magherafelt campus. The ‘Bring IT On’ event, funded by the Department for the Economy, organised by staff and Higher National students in the Computing department, featured a series of practical workshops by current and former students at the College.

Northern Regional College has introduced ‘drop in’ Essential Skills Hubs at all campuses to offer students additional support in English and Maths. Donal MacAuley, Acting Curriculum Area Manager for Essential Skills explains the thinking behind the exciting initiative: “The pandemic has been very disruptive to learning at all levels and some of our students have been affected more than others. We have found that some of them, including those who have already achieved their GCSE Maths and English, are struggling to complete their coursework.”

Northern Regional College Engineering students had a clean sweep in the Industrial Robotics category at the WorldSkills UK national finals. Louie Heath and Brennan Wilson, AKA ‘2 Dudes 1 Robot’ were gold medal winners; Cameron Middleton and Adam Kirkpatrick (‘Hammer Basher and Sparky’) won silver and Jude Moore and Aaron Stevenson (‘The Athletes’) won bronze medals.
