Northern Ireland is to get a world-class skills boost thanks to a revolutionary scheme aimed at attracting inward investment and generating economic growth. The Centre of Excellence from WorldSkills UK, in association with NCFE, is the brainchild of Belfast-born Dr Neil Bentley-Gockmann OBE, a former Deputy Director General of the CBI. Unique insights and expertise, gathered during decades of competing against and now collaborating with, world-class skills organisations in countries such as Japan, Russia, South Korea and Taiwan, are to be cascaded to six Northern Ireland colleges to bring substantial benefits to learners.

The Electrical Installation course Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus is to benefit from sponsorship from Core Electrical Distribution – a Northern Ireland based specialist cable management company – and Gripple, a supplier of new Fast-Trak brackets and wire system to building developments. The College’s Electrical Installation course combines the practical hands-on experience of the workplace with the knowledge, skills and understanding gained in the classroom and workshops enabling the students to become a fully qualified electricians upon completion.

Applications are currently invited for Ballymena’s first ever Manufacturing Excellence Academy. With just 20 places for people living in the wider Ballymena community and with the 01 October closing date looming, there is no time to waste. Northern Regional College is to play a key role in the Academy, which has been established with funding from The Gallaher Trust and assistance and support from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s Manufacturing Task Force. Successful applicants will secure a place on an intensive five-week training programme at the College in Ballymena. The programme has been specifically designed to help boost their employability in the local manufacturing sector.

They will be among the 400 plus finalists from across 64 disciplines looking to be crowned national skills champion and an opportunity to compete in next year’s World Finals in Shanghai.

Northern Regional College’s Access to University Diploma does exactly what it says on the tin. Caroline Nugent from Cookstown and Claire McDonald from Maghera recently completed an Access Diploma at the College’s Magherafelt campus and both ladies have just started a midwifery degree course at Queen’s University Belfast.
