Northern Regional College (NRC) has updated local stakeholders on the “exciting progress” made in recent months on its new campus development at its existing Union Street site in Coleraine. Funded by the Department for the Economy, the £40million development in the town forms part of a wider £84million capital investment programme, which will also see the development of a new campus for the College at Farm Lodge in Ballymena. The Coleraine campus has been temporarily relocated to the former St Joseph’s College at Beresford Avenue. The demolition phase at the College’s Union Street site by lead construction contractor Heron Bros. Ltd is almost complete, with construction of the new building then scheduled to get underway this summer.

Studying at Northern Regional College has helped a Co Derry man to carve out a successful career in Dublin. After his GCSEs, Bellaghy native, Kevin Brennan opted to study Business at the Magherafelt campus. This was to be the beginning of his long association with the Northern Regional College. He completed a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, Level 5 HND and a Business degree, as well as Level 5 ILM Leadership and Management and Level 1 in British Sign Language before graduating from Ulster University with a Master’s degree in Management and Corporate Governance.

Economy Minister Diane Dodds has appointed Mr Ken Nelson as chair of the governing body of Northern Regional College (NRC). Mr Nelson’s appointment is effective from 1 July 2021 and is for a period of four years. Commenting on the appointment, the Minister said: ‘’The position of chair provides a significant opportunity to positively influence the provision of skills in Northern Ireland. Under Mr Nelson’s leadership, the governing body can help the college to provide the skills needed to drive our economic recovery post Covid-19 and help to build a modern economy, which includes supporting the most disadvantaged towards sustainable career pathways.”

A new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is to see enhanced cooperation and collaboration between Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and Northern Regional College over the next 10 years. The MOU will facilitate increased partnership in mutual areas of entrepreneurship and innovation that are of the highest strategic priority to both parties. Led by a newly-formed joint Enterprise and Innovation Cooperation Steering Committee, the Council and College will work together to create an enhanced enterprise and innovation ecosystem in Mid and East Antrim, developed around new key infrastructure – such as the Council-led i4C Innovation Centre at St Patrick’s in Ballymena and the new Northern Regional College campus at Farm Lodge in the town.
