Northern Regional College is introducing a new Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) in Supply Chain and Logistics. The course, which will be the only one of its kind in Northern Ireland, will commence in September at the College’s Newtownabbey campus. In the wake of Brexit and the pandemic, there is a heightened awareness of the importance of supply chain and logistics but there is a significant shortage of people with specialised skills working in the sector. Having identified this skills gap, Northern Regional College worked closely with sector representatives to develop an innovative course to give people already working in or aspiring to work in the supply chain and logistics sector an opportunity to get an accredited qualification.

The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well at Northern Regional College with some students even managing to launch their own business during lockdown. With the hospitality sector almost at a standstill, Coleraine student Laura Pipinska, who is in the second year of a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Business, identified a niche market for custom made charcuterie inspired platter boxes.

Northern Regional College Students’ Union has selected the Simon Osborne Air Ambulance NI Appeal as its nominated charity for this year. Simon Osborne (28) from Ballymoney was seriously injured in a motorbike accident in January 2019 and the prompt response of the Air Ambulance crew who performed emergency surgery at the scene saved his life. To show their appreciation, his family embarked on a major fundraising drive to help keep the vital service going. To date, they have raised over £130,000. Tickets are now being sold for their latest fundraiser – a competition for a top of the range Volkswagen Golf – which they hope will raise another £90,000 for the charity.

A Canadian-based student who completed a tour guiding course at Northern Regional College has qualified as an OCN-accredited tour guide. Alison Balzer, originally from Bangor in County Down, emigrated to Vancouver with her family when she was just eight years old. Now living in Nova Scotia, like thousands of diaspora scattered around the world, Alison is passionate about her Celtic roots and wants to share her passion with others.

Northern Regional College, in partnership with the other five Further Education Colleges in Northern Ireland, is offering a series of free training programmes for managers in the hospitality and tourism sector. The Department for the Economy funded Hospitality and Tourism Recovery Training Programme is designed to address the key challenges facing the sector as it moves out of lockdown and prepares to resume operations. The training is aimed managers and technical specialists of all levels and will include Management webinars and Technical masterclasses.

The Department for the Economy (DfE) funded Apprenticeship Recovery Package has been extended until 31st March 2022. The package was introduced to help local businesses recover from the impact of the COVID-19 crisis by providing financial assistance to support the return and retention of furloughed apprentices, as well as the recruitment of new apprentices.
