The support and guidance she received as a student at Northern Regional College has inspired a young County Derry student to continue her studies with the long-term goal of running her own business. After leaving school, Rachel Rose Mallon from The Loup enrolled at the College’s Magherafelt campus. She completed two of the College’s Inclusive Learning programmes - Aspire to Work and Work Ready - before progressing to Level 2 Technical Business and has just successfully completed the second year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business.

On Track for a Career in Nursing

Having completed the first year of a two-year University Access Diploma in Social Science at Northern Regional College, a County Tyrone man is now on track for a career in nursing. When he left school with nine GCSEs and two A levels, Bobbie Currie from Coagh worked in retail for a number of years before taking up a full-time position as Home Administrator in a care home in 2018. At the time, he had no long term career plans but working alongside the carers and nurses inspired him to consider a nursing career.

An art lecturer who used Instagram to keep in touch with his students during lockdown said he was delighted with the high level of engagement. One of the many events cancelled because of COVID-19, was the traditional end of year show for Art, Design and Media Practice students at Northern Regional College. Art lecturer Paul Wilson explained how he and his colleagues continued to work closely with students to create a digital alternative for them to showcase their work. “The entire situation was completely surreal. Students were anxious because they had put so much time and energy into their work and we felt they deserved to reach a wider audience,” he said.

A Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is an ideal preparation for university, according to a former Northern Regional College student who has just graduated with first class honours degree in Fine Art from Ulster University. Laura Murdy from Carrickfergus got a D*DD profile in her Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (an equivalent of A*AA at A level) and could have gone directly to university. Instead, she opted to do the one-year Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Northern Regional College’s Ballymena campus.
