A Northern Regional College Carpentry and Joinery apprentice won a top European award crowning him Best Apprentice. Samuel Gilmore, based at the College’s Coleraine campus, travelled to Helsinki last week having reached the final of the Apprenticeship category at the European Alliance for Apprenticeship Awards. To come out on top, Samuel had to impress an expert panel of judges as well as securing the public vote.

Staff and students at Northern Regional College’s Trostan Avenue Campus in Ballymena underwent CPR training in support of World Restart a Heart Day on 16 October. Training has been taking place across all of the College’s six campuses this week, to mark the day and to raise awareness. CPR zones were set up on each campus and trained staff were on hand to explain the importance of CPR and demonstrate the technique. Automated External Defibrillators (AED) are now installed in all College campuses, and demonstrations were carried out on how and why they are used.

Art and Design students at Northern Regional College got a fascinating insight into the potential career opportunities ahead of them when renowned artist Jason Millar visted the College. Belfast-based Jason is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s most fashionable and collectable contemporary artists with work included in private and corporate collections worldwide. He also counts golfers Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke, as well as celebrity chef Jamie Oliver amongst his notable buyers.

Following the recent news of Wrightbus entering administration, Northern Regional College held a training and course information event at its Farm Lodge campus in Ballymena on Friday 04 October. Careers advisers from the College and the Department for the Economy were on hand, along with lecturing staff, to provide advice and guidance on qualifications, skills and courses. The College has worked closely with Wrightbus for many years and the event highlighted their ongoing support and encouragement for former employees and the wider community at this turbulent time.
