The Rt Hon Karen Bradley MP, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, today visited the Farm Lodge Campus of Northern Regional College in Ballymena. Mrs Bradley was given a tour of the Campus and met with staff and students from the engineering department, who showcased the work they are doing in the area of robotics.

Northern Regional College student, 18-year-old Samuel Gilmore from Aghadowey, is pictured with Northern Regional College Principal and Chief Executive, Professor Terri Scott, at a reception in the college’s Coleraine campus to celebrate Samuel’s gold medal win in the carpentry division at the UK National Finals of WorldSkills UK LIVE. Samuel and his fellow competitors were given 18 hours to design and construct a children’s wooden climbing frame in front of 80,000 spectators in Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre. Samuel, a Level 2 apprentice, surpassed competition from Level 4 colleagues to become one of only four gold medal winners from Northern Ireland.

Northern Regional College has been awarded the Matrix Quality Standard Award for Student Services, underlining the College’s commitment to providing all students with high quality, impartial advice and guidance. The Matrix Standard is a unique quality framework for organisations to assess and measure their advice and support services, which ultimately supports individuals in their choice of career, learning, work and life goals. The College’s advice and guidance services were assessed on four key elements including leadership and management, resources, service delivery and continual quality improvement.

Mark Hutchinson, Managing Director of Hutchinson Engineering, has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by Northern Regional College. Mark has been at the helm of his family’s successful manufacturing organisation for over 20 years. Under his leadership the company has developed into one of Northern Ireland’s foremost manufacturing firms, growing from a team of four to a 120-person strong workforce.

David Hunter, Chief Executive of Larne-based social enterprise, Access Employment Limited (AEL), has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by Northern Regional College. Working with AEL, the College has recently rebranded its site in Larne as the ‘Larne Community Hub’. AEL delivers college courses there and uses it as a base for social enterprises.

Claire Galloway, Clinical Lead Nurse for Sexual Health at the Northern Health & Social Care Trust, has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by Northern Regional College. Claire is a previous winner of the Royal College of Nursing’s ‘Northern Ireland Nurse of the Year’ Award and has been recognised for transforming and modernising the Trust’s sexual health service.
