Fifty apprentices and trainees attending Northern Regional College participated in the annual inter-campus heats of SkillBuild NI 2024. SkillBuild NI is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for young students and apprentices. The annual competition, governed by the Construction Industry Training Board NI (CITB NI), covers construction-related disciplines. The joinery, carpentry, cabinet making, plumbing and electrical installation competitions were all held at the College’s Newtownabbey campus, while the brickwork competition was held at the Farm Lodge campus in Ballymena.

All three completed a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care at the College, which paved the way for them to progress to university.

As part of NI Apprenticeship Week, Northern Regional College held a careers event to showcase Higher Level Apprenticeship opportunities at the College and local companies. The event in The Braid, Ballymena, which was hosted by Northern Regional College with support from Mid & East Antrim Labour Market, Department for Communities, the Department for the Economy and BringIT On, generated great interest among school leavers exploring their career options.

Almost thirty years after leaving school, Jason McClean has finally landed his dream job as a nurse. In pursuit of his dream, Jason studied Health and Social Care as a mature student at Northern Regional College and this was his stepping-stone to university. He completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Adult Nursing at Ulster University, graduating with first class honours in September 2023 and is now working as a Community Nurse in Ballymena.

A young Ballymoney woman who completed a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment at Northern Regional College is on track to graduate from Queen’s University, Belfast this year with a BSc (Hons) degree in Architecture. Instead of completing her A levels at grammar school and following the traditional academic route to university, Lizzie Cheung opted for the vocational route. She has no doubt that this was the right decision for her.
