The creative industries is an evolving aspect of the local economy and the world over. This course is delivered by industry professionals with their finger on the pulse of innovative and current trends and methods used at industry standard The course has benefited from substantial financial investment recently with students having access to industry standard hardware such as Canon DSLR’s, Camera lenses, lighting equipment, PC’s and a dedicated MAC lab (Newtownabbey Campus), all complete with the latest Adobe Creative Suite and dedicated web based creative software. Students engage in lessons with lecturers with a broad range of creative specialisms that directly relate to the units the course offers. These units are updated annually to reflect the current industry needs and students create a strong portfolio over the two years. As the students are upskilled in hardware & software as well as working on group projects along with peer learning that simulate real world assignments.

The course is perfect for anyone who has a passion for creativity and the focus and desire to progress into higher education or straight into employment in the creative industries. Examples of software used: Adobe Creative Suite including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, After Effects, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, Adobe XD, Adobe Animator, Illustrator and Indesign, Using PC and Apple computers. This is an exciting, highly creative course with many success stories.

As well as studying the exciting range of topics that makes up the course content, you will also get the opportunity to work on a range of live projects. In the past we have designed and developed many websites with original photography and video elements. An example is the earl bishop trail www.earlbishopstrail.com/ created logos & branding for clients. The Interactive Level 3 client base has also included PSNI, and The British Council. Students are also given the opportunity to compete in World Skills competition that is held in Birmingham each year. In addition students have the opportunity to compete in the Transversal Mobility Enterprise is VITAL competition. This an international competition with a selection of our students travelling to Valencia, Spain & Porto, Portugal.

This course is Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Creative Media Practice and is ideal for people wishing to learn about digital video recording and editing, graphics, photography, digital audio, setting up and managing live events, preparing media for streaming and social media. 

You will learn:

  • Video Camera Techniques using industry standard tools and processes
  • Editing Techniques using industry standard software and processes
  • Digital Photography and Post-Production
  • Motion Graphics for Video
  • Graphic Design for Video
  • Understanding Film Theory
  • Work with live and studio sound and stage lighting
  • Social Media & Events Management – how to work in teams to prepare and run live events, operate cameras, record and edit corporate videos, prepare content for streaming and develop the skills needed to work in the creative media industry.

If you are accepted onto this course without a Grade C or above in Maths and/or English you will be required to complete the relevant Essential Skills qualification. This will be a compulsory part of your timetable.

Day in the Life of a student

Our students often progress to Higher Education with degree courses specializing in areas such as Screen Production, Creative Media and Video Production being popular choices. By the end of the course you will have a diverse skill set and the potential of progressing into the Creative Media industry and/or progress to Higher Education. You will also have acquired research, managerial and other professional skills. Students that successfully complete the Extended Diploma to the required standard will also be eligible to apply to the College's higher education Creative Media programmes such as our HND in Web, Content Creation & Digital Marketing.

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age on or before 1 July in the year of proposed entry to the course and have at least 4 GCSE's at Grade C or above or other relevant qualifications.

Course Fees

No fees.

For most students, full-time Further Education courses at Level 1-3, including Apprenticeships, have no course fees.  


Level 1-3 Further Education (full-time)

  • Aged 16-18: no tuition fees apply.  
  • Aged 19:24: If you have already achieved a full Level 3 qualification, fees will apply.  
  • Aged 25 or over: Tuition fees will apply unless you are in receipt of a Further Education (FE) grant. Admission to full-time Further Education courses for applicants aged 25+ will be considered on an individual basis at the College’s discretion.

Level 3 Access Courses (full-time)

  • If you are in receipt of a Further Education (FE) grant, no fees apply.
  • If you are aged 19 or over and have already achieved a Level 3 qualification (equivalent to 3 A-Levels), fees will apply.
